Skin & Bones

Size: Life size
The completion of continuous research allows the development of design ideas, using architects, architecture and fashion designers. Using the researched Tudor architecture and primary photographic evidence; photographs of Chester's architecture was incorporated into the final dress. The designs of buildings create patterns surrounding the bottom of the skirt and the shapes of the arches and columns, influencing the dress design. The large skirt is open at the front and created separately as an overskirt; the fitted bodice remains. The 'Skin and Bones' of architecture is shown visually by the two elements of the dress: the overskirt and dress underneath. The black dress is reflecting the structure and foundations built to support the magnificent buildings: the 'Bones' of the piece, still on show, in parallel to arches and pillars used in architecture. The 'Skin' of the dress is the overskirt, the delicate and largest part of the piece, similar to the added interior and exterior embellishments on Tudor architecture.
