Identity

2019
Size: 80cm H x 64cm W x 30cm D
Who am I? What are the qualities and beliefs that distinguish my identity as a person, as me? Are they whole, complex, complete, fractured of faceted? The sculpture is a study into the depth and complex nature of identity. An exploration into intensity and dimensionality, the mask forefronted, the image fractured and segmented, the mirror reflecting what is visible and invisible from diverse perspectives. The frame embellished and tailored to myself, without detracting from the contents it contains. The piece can be viewed as a photograph or a reflection, either of which represents a version of our identity. When the artwork is viewed, the image taken on is not only the alternative wire portrait but also the viewer's own reflection, a reminder of their place in the world. The viewer sees themselves in the work, a world that is familiar and unique to the viewer but also shared with those around us, symbolising the complexity of our understanding of our identity and our place in the world.
Materials: Wooden picture frame, spray paint, grey & black, steel 0.8 mm wire, silver plated 0.05 mm wire, mirror, mod roc, wooden square dowel, merino wool roving: white, grey & black – felted.
